Meet at Bladensburg Waterfront Park 15 minutes before departure to talk and outfit before we paddle a couple of miles down to the National Arboretum (part of the USDA's park and research gardens in Washington, D.C. ). If you are game, we'll take trash bags with us to collect any floating debris. Once docked, enjoy conversation and company as we enjoy the Arboretum gardens. Your guide(s) will also share stories about the Anacostia and its surroundings, including the story of The Peace Tree (1625), which survived 1945 Hiroshima, Japan, and was later gifted to the Arboretum. About 2-3 hours of time in the kayaks. Total experience is 4.5-5 hours. The neighborhood of Eastern Market/Barracks Row is set on historic Capitol Hill, where the homes of historical figures mix with modern day congressmen. One of DC’s first neighborhoods, you’ll see the small town charm in the center of the City. Embark on a gastronomic adventure through the heart of Washington DC with our guided food tour of the Capitol Hill and Eastern Market neighborhoods featuring three stops at locally owned restaurants and market stalls. Unlike many food tours you get a choice in what you eat! Choose from a variety of toppings and fillings to personalize the stops to your preferences. Starting off at the Capitol South Metro, you will place your orders with your tour guide for the stops along the way. We will preorder the food so that it is ready as you arrive. Then the tour begins taking you to historic points throughout the neighborhood with tastings sprinkled throughout to keep both your stomach and your mind occupied. After 2 hours of walking and snacking the tour will end just half of a mile from where it began with both your thirst for knowledge quenched and your appetite satisfied. Lincoln Memorial - It is the most iconic memorial in the country, dedicated in 1922, honoring the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln who occupies an almost mythic and revered place in the hearts of Americans everywhere. Korean War Veterans Memorial This memorial has a black granite wall reflecting 19 stainless steel statues representing the 38th months of the Korean War. This was not just an American effort, and this memorial honors all those United Nations countries. Vietnam Veterans Memorial - A quiet place designed for reflection, this memorial has over 58 thousand names of US casualties from this conflict etched into the black granite panels. Accommodating the wall is the Three Soliders Statue and a memorial to the female nurses who served. World War II Memorial - 56 granite pillars surround the fountain in this majestic tribute to the greatest generation of Americans who came of age in a time of economic depression, and emerged from this conflict as heroes. Stroll around the grounds and you will learn about different aspects of the war from the perspective of the US which fought in both The Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial - Step off the National Mall to the Tidal Basin to visit one of the newer memorials. The National Archives will introduce you to the original paperwork that formed the United States of America. This 1.5 to 2 hour semi-private guided tour will welcome up to 8 people to come face to face with the seemingly humble documentation that gave birth to the most powerful nation in the world. Step through the doors of this majestic neoclassical building, considered a temple to American history. Follow your guide, starting at the National Archives Rotunda, to learn about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution while standing in front of the perfectly-preserved documents from the 17th and 18th centuries. Alongside the Bill of Rights and the Federalist Papers, they all feature the signatures of world-famous statesmen like Alexander Hamilton. Next, in the Public Vaults Exhibits, letters written by presidents including George Washington and John F. Kennedy are on display. The United States’ turbulent racial past comes alive while learning about the Emancipation Proclamation, which helped end slavery in the 19th century. More recent papers, like a citation issued to civil rights activist Rosa Parks, illustrates how long these racial issues lasted. Finally, in the Rubenstein Gallery, examine even older documents like the Magna Carta of 1297. Although it was written well before the Americas were even discovered by Europeans, it heavily influenced many of the others. Pennsylvania Avenue has been host to inaugurations, protests and celebrations throughout our Nation's history. But the development of this grand boulevard, connecting the Capitol to the White House, is fraught with conflict and intrigue. Starting in the front yard of the White House in Lafayette Square, we'll discuss the history of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. From construction to destruction, fire, flood, addition and renovation, you'll learn how this most famous address has changed throughout history. Taking a look at other buildings along Lafayette Square, we'll discuss the presidents, politicians, and power players of all kinds that have lived along this storied block. After exploring the White House neighborhood, we'll take a stroll down Pennsylvania Ave toward the Capitol Building. Past the hallowed halls and imposing facades of the Willard Hotel, Old Post Tower, FBI Headquarters, and one of the weirdest memorials in DC, we'll learn how downtown Washington went from Murder Bay to America’s Main Street.

Experience young Duke Ellington’s Washington DC musical journey as we walk through the historic U Street neighborhood. On our journey back in time to the beginning of the Jazz age, you will discover the locations where Duke took amazing risks, bet on himself, and always trusted in his ability to connect to others through his music. We start with his completely unlikely introduction to music as a seven year old near the historic Howard Theatre and end at the site of the old Lincoln Colonnade where, as a twenty three year old, Duke experiences the event that leads to the end of his Washington DC music odyssey. You don’t need to know anything about jazz or jazz history to love Duke’s story. You just need to be ready to get to know an improvisational, creative kid growing up in a musical neighborhood that you can’t help but fall in love with. A kid who ended up changing everything. So how exactly does that kid change the way people compose music throughout the 20th century? Come and join us on our “Making the Duke” historic walk and experience it for yourself!

Join me for a walking tour of Washington's U Street neighborhood trace the history of the area through its buildings! Once known as Washington’s “Black Broadway,” the U Street corridor has been the civic and cultural heart of the District’s Black community since the turn of the century. Rich in architecture, history and culture, U Street was developed by and for the then segregated Black community of the Federal Capital. Revered Jazz icons like Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Cab Calloway once walked U Street, performing at nightclubs and glamorous music halls in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Beautiful buildings, largely designed by local Black architects, still stand as a testament to this self-sustaining community. On the residential side streets, a fascinating evolution of row house development and design is evident in the diverse and varied homes, some dating back to the 1860s! We'll begin our tour at the African American Civil War Memorial along bustling U Street, appreciating locally well known anchors of the community, like the Prince Hall Masonic Temple, Bohemian Caverns, Bens Chili Bowl, and the Lincoln Theater. We'll also get off the main drag, exploring side streets and back alleys to get a true sense of this fascinating neighborhood.

We would never give you a map - this would ruin the surprise of finding a secret door but you will have a Q & A with one of our docents before you start your journey. It’s not in the finding, it’s in the seeking that is important. Experience the magic! Your self-guided experience will begin with an in-depth video introduction to our history and our secret doors, as well as what to look for as you go. Then, we will send you off on your own to search for the secrets and treasures that are everywhere to be found. As you explore the mansion, which is steeped in history and intrigue, you'll be walking in the footsteps of presidents, freedom fighters, G-Men, historians, famous musicians, and fiction writers. Built 125 years ago, nearly every President since Teddy Roosevelt has visited. Things to note We guarantee you can see at least 60 of our legendary rooms — but be warned secret doors are tricky to find —if you find 2 or 3 you are an above average sleuth All ages can attend. If you have a short attention span, this is the place for you because there is so much to see and do. If you are a minimalist, you will be overwhelmed. There we will sample donuts made from a business that’s been in the same family for five generations. From there we’ll head downtown, where we’ll see a restaurant favored by a former President before passing by the White House itself for a perfect photo op. After soaking in some history at Lafayette Square, we’ll head deeper into DC to try some local fan favorite donuts from local celebrities. From there, we’ll head down Palmers Alley, one of the most photographed spots in DC, where we’ll end our adventure with delectable donuts with an international flavor.
